PROTEX is the collective name for when non-woven (the paper-like material that makes up snus and nicotine pouches) is treated to make part of the material impermeable to the contents of the pouches.
This barrier still allows flavors and nicotine to mix with saliva and be distributed to the oral mucosa, but means that the substances in the pouch are not in direct contact with the gums for several hours a day.
The picture shows PROTEX applied to a non-woven paper which is then formed into Stingfree beads.

HIGH pH VALUES ARE HARMFUL
A higher pH makes it easier for nicotine to be absorbed through the oral mucosa. But a high pH in the mouth is bad for gum health.
The PROTEX barrier still allows flavors and nicotine to be distributed to the oral mucosa, but keeps them out of direct contact with the gums for several hours a day.
BLUE SIDE TO THE GUMS
The PROTEX barrier still allows flavors and nicotine to mix with saliva and be distributed to the oral mucosa, but does not allow the substances to be in direct contact with the gums for several hours a day.
